A Chinese man arrested for attempted theft after swallowing a diamond worth nearly $14,000 at a gem exhibition in Sri Lanka. The two men had arrived in Sri Lanka on Monday as tourists, police said. The diamond owner Silva said the captured man had offered to pay for the 7.2mm-diameter stone, which was valued at 1.8 million rupees ($13,600), but that exhibition organisers wanted police to press charges. "He... appeared to be appraising it and suddenly put it in his mouth," a police officer who declined to be named said.
